Chapter 12

Max

Something was off about Ramsau.

Then again, I wouldn’t take that as a measure for evil. Something had always been off about Ramsau, even before what happened to me. I’d only been too blind—or in denial—to realize the dark cloud that hovered over the place.

I smelled it on the air the moment we reached the outskirts of the village. When we eased to a stop in front of my old home, I exited the vehicle and looked up at it. I hadn’t been back in almost two hundred years. After I’d been gone a while, Otto had returned to purchase the place in Leviticus’ name. Years later, we transferred the deed into my company’s name.

Just in case anyone went looking.

It was out of an abundance of caution, but I wasn’t willing to take the chance.

A big breath told me danger lurked around us. None of them were close, but I knew it would only be a matter of time.

When I turned to look at Charlie, he was still wearing his seatbelt and staring off into the distance.

Confused, I hurried around the side and tapped his shoulder through the window.

He jumped almost a foot in the air.

“Talk to me.”

“It’s nothing.” He glanced over his shoulder. “I just have this really bad feeling—where is Otto?”

“He’ll be here.” I opened the door. “Come on. Let’s go inside. You must be—”

I didn’t get a chance to finish. Creatures bounded out of the trees and headed directly for the van. I grabbed Charlie’s hand and yanked him into my chest while trying to keep the vehicle between us and them.

My concern for Charlie’s safety had distracted me and I didn’t see the coming.

I hadn’t felt them, their darkness.

Before I’d started speaking with him, the danger was far away. I hadn’t gauged them properly.

Irritated with myself, I pushed my frame in front of him as two nachzehrers growled and came around the corner. I knew I couldn’t fight them off in my human form. There were too many of them.

Angry, I shifted to the front right of the truck, braced my hand against the side of it and growled while shoving. The vehicle lifted and sailed through the air taking out a wall of nachzehrers.

“How?” Charlie asked.

“I’ll explain—”

I didn’t finish. The nachzehrers weren’t stopping. As they swarmed us, all I could do was pull Charlie into my arms, bury his face into my neck, and allowed my body to morph.

I used my wings to cover him, to stop the rain of blows heading toward his head. Frustrated, I pushed upward with my wings, sending the enemies flying. I released a mouth of fire, dragging my head from side to side like a flame-thrower.

Hearing their screams as they burned made me happy.

When I landed us back on our feet, Charlie staggered away from me and rushed for the door. Though I knew he was trying to get away from me, from the beast that raged inside me, I was glad he would be at least out of harm’s way.
